Tee Drums 14x7 (7.2mm thick)
All Exotic outer plys are part of the drum shell construction (rather than wrapping a veneer around a ready made shell). Before we can start on the shells construction, each veneer has to be prepped and pressed. Poplar Burr is probably one of the bumpiest veneers to work with so before we start all the burrs have to be secured in with a special tape and then we can begin with the pressing process.
The glossing on this shell is acrylic and built up with many light coats and cuttings back with wet and dry paper between every 4 coats until smooth. The shell is then left to harden for several days and then the cut back with compound and waxed.
The Poplar Burr also looks great with a satin finish, for this i like to use a Tung oil. This is applied in many fine coats and slowly cures to a satin look with a slight golden tint. resistant to water better than any other pure oil finish.
I have finished the drum with brass fittings, classic tube lugs and 2.3 triple flanged hoops (i'm not a fan of die cast) I find the triple flanged hoops much better for an open sounding drum, die cast can tend to strangle the drum sound a little.
Other Burr veneered finishes are available, to include... Walnut, Oak, Elm, Chestnut, Maple, Olive and more.
